Sunset vs Day Cruise in Santorini (Morning vs Sunset)

Short answer: morning for the best swimming, sunset for the famous sky. Same route, €80 by day or €95 at sunset, different magic.

The sunset hour on board — golden light over the Aegean

Which is better, morning or sunset?

Neither is objectively better — they’re different experiences on the same route. The morning cruise (10:30 AM – 3:30 PM) gets calmer seas, brighter water and emptier swim stops; the sunset cruise (3:00 PM – sunset) trades midday brightness for golden light and the caldera sunset with dinner on deck. The day cruise is €80 per person and the sunset cruise €95; both include the meal, drinks and hotel transfers.

Choose the morning cruise if…

Swimming is your priority. Water visibility peaks before noon, the coves at Red Beach and Mesa Pigadia are quietest, and kids tend to be at their best. You’re also back by mid-afternoon with the whole evening free — many guests pair it with dinner in Oia. See the Day Cruise →

Choose the sunset cruise if…

You came to Santorini for that sky. Watching it from the water — no crowds jostling on a wall in Oia, wine in hand, the cliffs turning copper — is the version postcards can’t capture. Dinner is served on board as the light drops. See the Sunset Cruise →

Can’t decide?

Couples usually pick sunset; families with young children usually pick morning; photographers book both and call it research. If your dates are flexible, check our sunset times guide — in high summer the sunset cruise runs late enough for an afternoon nap first.

The verdict, by traveler

Couples: sunset. The last hour on the water is the memory you came for. Families with young children: morning, without hesitation; calmer sea, brighter water, everyone back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. Groups of friends: sunset for the atmosphere, or a private sunset charter if there are four to six of you. Photographers: both, honestly; if it has to be one, sunset. Prone to seasickness: morning, when the sea is usually at its calmest; our seasickness guide has the rest.

Day vs sunset: the questions we get

Is the sunset cruise or the day cruise better in Santorini?

Neither is better; they are the same route in different light. Choose the day cruise for the best swimming and the brightest water, and the sunset cruise for golden light, dinner on deck and the sunset seen from the water. The day cruise costs €80 per person and the sunset cruise €95, with the meal, drinks and hotel transfers included.

Do the day and sunset cruises visit the same places?

Yes. Both sail the six-stop caldera loop from Vlychada: Red Beach, White Beach, Mesa Pigadia and Akrotiri, the volcano and Hot Springs, and Fira Old Port, weather permitting. The sunset cruise simply times the last leg for the sunset.

Can you swim on the sunset cruise?

Yes. The swim stops come early in the sunset cruise, while the sun is still high and the water warm; the later part of the cruise is for dinner on deck and the sunset.

What time does the sunset cruise finish?

It ends at sunset, which moves through the season: around 8:30 PM in high summer, closer to 6:30 PM by late October and about 5:20 PM in November. Our month-by-month sunset times guide lists the hour for your dates, and your pickup time is confirmed the day before.
